Immigration and its Impact on Fashion

In this project we are going to talk about the fashion of the immigrants in Greece during the 20th century.

PONTUS

Pontus is a region on the southern coast of the Black Sea, located in modern-day eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey. The name was applied to the coastal region and its mountainous hinterland (rising to the Pontic Alps in the east) in antiquity by the Greeks who colonized the area and derived from the Greek name of the Black Sea: Πόντος Εὔξεινος Pontos Euxeinos (Hospitable Sea), or simply Pontos.

Pontus was in ancient times a field of intense Greek colonization but also a kingdom in Mithridates. In the late Byzantine period, it re-existed as an independent state. Until 1923 and the compulsory exchange of populations that followed the dictates of the Treaty of Lausanne were largely inhabited by predominantly Greek-speaking Christian and second-class Muslim populations.

Several (about 85,000-100,000) Greek Pontians had left their homes already in 1918, following the Russian army on its retreat. They settled as refugees in Georgia and Crimea. They maintained their ties and their national consciousness, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990 their descendants settled as refugees in Greece.

FASHION

Women

Women used to wear button-down shirts, which were usually satin. They also wore pearls of varying lengths and large / prominent rings.

Men :

Men had a huge preference to leather clothing, weather it was a leather trouser, or a leather jacket and so on.

On the other hand,  they had an athletic look too. They used to wear wide track pants with wide blazers and white sneakers. * In case you haven't realized yet, their athletic look used to be the current athletic look of 2019, as fashion continues to go backwards and vintage is the one that dominates. *

Bride and Groom :

Brides used to wear long, white dresses and white gloves up to the elbow. Grooms used to wear a suit with a tie.

ARCHITECTURE :

As the immigrants arrived to Greece, the goverment decided to give them really small, wooden houses to live in, called ' Vagonia ' because they were homeless. Most of them left those homes as soon as they found a better place to live but there are still people living there.

Once the immigrants settled and found (bought) their own houses, they decided to bring in greece some of their decorations. One of them was the characteristic ' carpet on the wall ' and an other one was the engraved, wooden table.
